The heat is there to help you. Yoga changes the construction of the body from the inside out and flushes away the waste products of the glands and organs of your body - providing natural irrigation of the body through the circulatory system with the help of the respiratory system. In a Bikram Yoga class you generate internal heat through breath control and the systematic execution of the postures.

We also utilise external heat to further that cleaning process by causing you to sweat, releasing impurities through the skin. The heat makes the yoga accessible and safe, by warming up your body to help increase mobility.

The heat also:

  • makes your muscles, fascia and connective tissue more elastic allowing you to move into postures more effectively
  • thins your blood to clear your circulatory system
  • increases blood flow and stimulates detoxification
  • speeds up the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids
  • increases your t-cell count and improves your immune system
  • provides a mental challenge, developing your ability to meditate through distractions and improve your focus and determination

More than 40 years ago, Bikram Choudhury used his knowledge of yoga therapy to design a 90-minute program that would allow ANYONE regardless of age, injury or level of fitness to achieve and maintain optimal physical and mental health. His beginning yoga series systematcially works every part of the body to give all the internal organs, the veins, the ligaments and the muscles everthing they need to function. Each posture prepares for and leads to the next one; each posture needs to be held for a certain period of time to achieve maximum benefit; each posture takes care of something different in the body, and they all work together sequentially to restore all the systems of the human body to working order. Bikram Yoga is more than just exercise and meditation: it is medicine. And, like all medicine, the dosage has to be correct for it to work effectively.

  • Come to class well-hydrated. It’s a good idea to drink 2 litres of water a day anyway, and if you are coming to class aim to drink a little more.
  • Don’t eat a big meal in the 2 hours before the class. A light snack is ok if you need one, but it’s better not to practice on a full stomach.
  • Don’t be scared. Everyone at Hot3yoga was once a first timer like you. It’s normal to be nervous, but we are a big welcoming community. Nobody is judging you, we are very supportive, and you’ll notice people are too fo-cussed on their own practice to see what you are up to.

The series remains the same, the postures remain the same, the heat and humidity remain the same, but YOU change. The consistency of the series allows you to develop and deepen your relationship with your own body. You will become attuned to its fluctuations and changes and strengthen your mind-body connection.

As you practice regularly your body and your mind will improve, and as that happens your ability to perform the postures and to find stillness and concentration in the class will also improve.

Sweat is your body’s cooling mechanism. It enables you to keep a stable core temperature. It also releases toxins through your pores, clearing away dead skin and other impurities - yes, it sounds gross, but it’s good for you and we have an excellent cleaning system as well as anti-microbial carpet so nothing to worry about!
So, even though it feels weird at first, just let the sweat run. There’s no need to wipe it away. In fact you will just make yourself hotter. Sweat is your friend; embrace it.

On that note, please avoid wearing perfumes or deodorant in the class. You don’t need them. Our air exchange system and technical flooring can cope with any natural odours.
